The Beginning

While CEO Josh Cohen was studying in Australia during a semester break from the University of Connecticut, the idea for The Junkluggers came to him like a bolt of lightning. A friend mentioned that he made $100 hauling away a refrigerator from a neighbor and Josh thought, “Hey, I can do that!” The year was 2004, and upon his return to the U.S., 21 year old Josh Cohen hit the streets handing out homemade fliers all around town. Soon the phones began to ring and Josh quickly realized there was a demand for a reliable, professional and eco-focused junk removal service.

He built the business from the ground up, first by borrowing his mom’s SUV, then adding a trailer for bigger jobs. A few years later, Josh purchased Old Rusty, the (mostly) reliable pickup truck that wasn’t much to look at, but got the job done. Old Rusty helped to expand from Josh’s native Fairfield County in Connecticut to Westchester County in New York. Eventually Old Rusty was retired and replaced by bright green dump trucks as operations expanded into New York City and Nassau County.

Franchising

As the original corporate territory expanded, Josh realized he was spreading himself a little thin overseeing operations in Connecticut, New York City, Long Island, and Northern New Jersey. So, in 2013, he decided to start franchising. Cut to a few years later, and The Junkluggers is operating franchised locations all over the country with many more to open in the coming years!
